Anglers shouldn't fear round gobies; Study

Ann Arbor, MI – After an army of round gobies invaded the Great Lakes basin in 1990, concerns arose that anglers were catching fewer sport fish because round gobies competed aggressively with some sport fish for bait and lures. However, data to support those concerns were not found by a recent study.
A recent scientific study on the upper Niagara River found that anglers who caught more round gobies generally did not catch fewer smallmouth bass. Yet, anglers felt that catching round gobies reduced their likelihood of catching smallmouth bass because baited hooks and lures were not in the water when round gobies were handled. "It appears that concerns about the effect of round gobies on sport fishing may have been based on perception and not reality," said Dennis Dunning, a fishery biologist who conducted the study.

Dear Angling Enthusiast,

The Wisconsin Council of Sport Fishing Organizations, WCSFO, is into its 3rd decade of presenting the Wisconsin anglers’ viewpoints to the Department of Natural Resources, DNR.  WCSFO represents all fish species, as prey are just as important as are the predators.  We work to improve habitat, eliminate non-native invasive species, improve launch accesses numbers, help fishing clubs obtain grants, provide a website calendar for fishing organization announcements, publish, via the website, fishing articles, book reviews and news, plus run Kids Fishing Clinics via member clubs.

WCSFO is a federally tax-exempt (5O1C3) non-profit organization.  We meet both in spring and fall.  Club representatives, individual members, fishing-related business members, the outdoors media, DNR representatives and occasionally members of the legislature gather to discuss the latest hot topics, define projects needing promotion, and educate fellow members on problems requiring fixing.  WCSFO is Wisconsin’s anglers and angling businesses acting as a unified body and not as individuals or small clubs with little voice in Wisconsin’s fishing decisions.

Your club, individual or business membership is a vital step toward providing the best fish habitat and fishing possible.  Your viewpoints are needed as WCSFO members.

Sincerely,

L.A. Van Veghel
